Newick RFC 1ST XV produced a magnificent team display on a return to league action defeating high flying Eastbourne II at home. In tough conditions Newick made a fantastic start taking the game to the visitors with the forwards putting in the hard yards. With player coach David Hemsley leading from the front, Newick secured a turnover from a ruck which saw the ball played out to the backs who produced a quite brilliant move with Centres Mark Barnard and Liam Craig-Davies carving open the Eastbourne defence with some superb running Rugby before setting up winger George Russell for the opening try of the game which was converted by Kevin Byrne. As the first half went on Newick continued to dominate with the forward pack driving the visitors back at the scrums and having success with two impressive rolling mauls which resulted in a loss of discipline to allow Byrne to slot over a penalty to see Newick lead 10-0 at the break. The start of the 2nd half continued in much the same way as the first with Newick still dominating and on a pitch which was deteriorating badly you wouldn’t of expected the try which soon followed which again was quite brilliant and the superb Liam Craig-Davies was again involved skipping through the Eastbourne back line to lay on a plate the 2nd try of the game for George Russell, Byrne missed the kick but at 15-0 the game appeared to be safe. As expected Eastbourne didn’t give up and a slack ten minute spell saw Newick concede two quick tries and all of a sudden Eastbourne were back in a game they were never really in, the arrears were reduced to 15-10, the Eastbourne kicker failing to add the conversion each time. As the game headed into the last 15 minutes the Newick defence needed to stand firm and it did with some excellent tackles being made, particularly from flankers Radim Malina and Andrew Payne who put in some great hits. With a final score needed to make the game safe Newick’s forwards began to make ground up the pitch into Eastbourne territory with stand in skipper Neil Morgan making some powerful carries , as the posts neared Eastbourne conceded a penalty which was converted by Kevin Byrne to seal a deserved 18-10 win with the man of the match award going to Mark Barnard.

Newick’s 2nd XV travelled to Uckfield to take on their 3rd XV and in a close fought game they went down 13-5. Coach Wayne Thomas praised his young team for their high level of commitment and intensity. Dave Anthony scored the only try of the game for Newick with Jon Calway securing the man of the match award in his first start at flanker.

Newick RFC 1st XV travelled down to the Norfolk Arms of Stenning and were edged out 13-3 in a tough game that was played in difficult conditions. Having beaten top of the league East Grinstead II the previous week it was a disappointing result for Newick who were hoping to build upon that. During the early stages of the game Newick were on the back foot as the Norfolk Arms had the better of the opening stages of play enjoying the lion’s share of possession and territory but the Newick defence stood firm and managed to keep the home side out. The following a turnover from a ruck Newick managed to break up the field and enter their opponents 22 for the first time and a loss of discipline cost them 3 points as Kevin Byrne slotted over an excellent kick in swirling winds to give Newick a 3-0 lead. From then on the contest remained even for the rest of the half until a poor defensive line in the minute before the break allowed the Norfolk Arms to cross over for the first try of the game, the conversion was missed and at the break the score was 5-3. In the second half Newick were looking for a solid start and they got the opposite when a knock on allowed the home team a scrum on the five meter line which allowed them to cross over to increase the lead to 10-3. Newick put in a strong 2nd half performance and had plenty off ball, creating chances and forcing mistakes from the home team, Kevin Byrne had 2 kicks at goal blown of course before Norfolk Arms wrapped up the 13-3 win with a penalty in the dying stages. Newick’s 2nd xv crashed to a home defeat, also going down 13-3 to Crowborough II in what was again a tough game played in difficult conditions. The 1st XV will hope for better this weekend with them taking on Rye in the Sussex Shield at Newick.

Plumpton 12-6 newick 1xv | Newick 2xv 5-3 Cinque Ports

Another mixed weekend for Newick sides as the first XV travelled to Plumpton and were edged out 12-6 in the local derby
Newick will rue a number of missed opportunities to have possibly won the game having come back strongly in the 2nd half.
Plumpton began on the offensive and dominated the opening 20 minutes of play before Newick came back into it. Plumpton opened the scoring early on to take a 7-0 lead before Kevin Byrne slotted over a penalty to reduce the arrears to 7-3 with half time approaching, then the game turned and with a missed kick to touch into a fierce wind, Plumpton crossed over to take a 12-3 lead at the break.
Newick started the 2nd half well and spent sustained periods of time in the hosts 22 and in a half where defence was on top, only three more points were added by Newick and the game closed out with the home side taking a 12-6 win in a well fought game.

Newicks 2nd XV had a better afternoon notching up consecutive league wins following a close 5-3 home defeat of Cinque Ports.

Newick 7-17 Hove Beefeaters | Hellingly 15-52 Newick 2

Newick RFC 1st XV crashed to a disappointing home defeat to Hove Beefeaters ending a run of three consecutive league wins.
The hosts were on the back foot from the start and struggled to get into the game although Radim Malina did open the scoring with the first chance Newick managed to create, Kevin Byrne slotted the conversion over to put Newick 7-0 up.
The struggles still continued for the remainder of the half and Hove scored a converted try and penalty to lead 10-7 at the break. Newick came out fighting hard in the 2nd half and saw much more of the play with scrum half James Waylett and player coach David Hemsley putting in solid performances , despite this Hove scored another converted try and the match finished Newick 7-17 Hove Beefeaters.
Newick travel to the racecourse ground to take on Plumpton this weekend.

There was better news for Newick’s 2nd XV who had a tricky away match v Hellingly II but came away with the points following a thumping 52-15 win.
Newick didn’t have it all their own way and despite racing into a 14-0 lead early on the home side fought back with two unconverted tries to reduce the arrears to 14-10 at half time.
In the 2nd half Newick dominated the play with some strong forward running from No. 8 Martin Parris and five tries from Centre Phil Richards, Jimmy Furzer notched up two tries and John Satchwill and Finn Gunn both crossed over as Newick ran riot scoring 9 tries in total to the delight of coach Wayne Thomas.

Barnes Green 1st (5-9) Newick 1st | Newick 2nd (0-21) Bognor 3rd

Newick again had a mixed weekend as both sides were in back in league action.
The first XV travelled to Barns Green and came away with a 9-5 win in what was a very scrappy but hard fought game.
Newick began the brighter side and created several good scoring opportunities following some good interplay among the backs yet it was Barns Green who opened the scoring against the run of play although they failed to convert the try.
Shortly before the half time interval Kevin Byrne reduced the arrears with a solid kick from a tight angle. The second half started with Newick looking to take the game to the hosts but despite dominating the scrum and spending sustained amounts of time in the Barns Green 22, couldn’t cross the line.
As the match entered the last 20 minutes Barns Green began to lose their discipline and gave away two penalties in quick succession which were neatly put between the posts by Kevin Byrne, despite a rally in the last five minutes from the home side, Newick held on to secure the points and a third consecutive league win with Tim Hemsley securing the man of the match award after an excellent all round display.

The 2nd XV suffered a home defeat to Bognor Regis III going down 21-0. After a bright start by the home side and some excellent running rugby from the backs the power of the visiting pack began to dominate and as injuries took their toll, the home side finished with 14 men.

Holbrook 1st(22-20) Newick 1st | Newick 2nd (27-19) Eastbourne 4th

Newick 1st travelled away to Sussex league 1 Holbrook RFC at the weekend to play in the first round proper of the RFU Junior Vase.
Newick sadly lost 22-20 in a game that the Newick boys felt that they should have won.

The 2's had better luck at home against Eastbourne 4s in a friendly. The result was a win of 27-19.

this weekend see the continuation of the league campaign. The first team travel to Barnes Green and the Seconds host Bognor 3's. Both games kickoff at 3pm.

Newick 1 (15-0) St Francis 1 | Seaford 2 (41-0) Newick 2

Newick RFC 1st XV followed on their defeat of Shoreham with a very impressive win at home to St Francis.
Newick dominated from 1-15 to outplay the powerful visiting pack with some excellent forward play and some fine distribution among the backs.
Newick opened the scoring on 15 minutes when a fine move down the right wing between captain Stuart Wrench and Scrum half James Waylett was finished off in emphatic style by Mark Barnard who smashed his way past the St Francis full back for the try.
As half time approached the play was deep in the St Francis 22 and the visitors defence was constantly being tested, with a minute to go before the break, Dave Whiting peeled off the back off a maul following a line out and crashed over from ten yards.
Newick began the 2nd half with a 10-0 lead and immediately continued to bombard to the visitors with some solid forward running from Neil Morgan and the excellent George Chadwick , you sensed another score was coming, and it soon did with Phil Campbell notching up his 5th try in all competitions this season, Kevin Byrne missed with the conversion to complete a unusually off day with the boot but Newick were comfortable heading into the final ten minutes with a 15-0 lead and never looked threatened, and whenever they did Radim Malina was on hand with some expert tackling , putting himself all over the field.
Player coach Dave Hemsley, who had a fine game himself was delighted with the teams work rate, the hard work during pre season is starting to be rewarded, the game finished Newick 15-0 St Francis.

The 2nd XV had another tough day at the office going down 41-0 to Seaford 2nd XV , credit must go to Wayne Thomas’s men who though who fought hard but the Seaford defence was solid throughout.

Next Cup Game

Having had a little time to trawl about on the net I discovered that the draw for the next round of the RFU Junior Vase had been drawn, just no one had told us.....

The next game is the first round proper and will be played away at Sussex One side Holbrook on Saturday 3rd October.

Kick Off should be at 2.30pm.

Newick 1xv (20-7) Shoreham | Heathfield Boars (48-8) Newick 2xv

Newick RFC had a mixed 2nd week of the league season. Following their defeat to Hellingly on the opening day, the 1st XV bounced back well to beat Shoreham 20-7 in a fiercely contested match which saw two yellow cards shown. Newick opened the scoring with a penalty from the boot of Kevin Byrne before conceding a converted try to trail 7-3 at half time. The 2nd half saw Newick turn it on with some powerful carries from Neil Morgan and man of the match John Gordon was having a fine game in his first start as hooker. Tries from the very impressive ex Lewes veteran Dave Whiting and flanker Radim Malina saw Newick move into a 13-7 lead heading into the last ten minutes before Phil Campbell intercepted a loose pass from the Shoreham fly half to run in a 60 metre try which was converted by Byrne to seal victory. Sadly the 2nd XV suffered a heavy defeat, the guys fought hard but were beaten 48-8 by a very strong Heathfield Boars 4th XV.

Having not been there i don't yet have a match report but i think the result speaks for its self.
When i have a report i will put it up.

this weekend both teams are in action. The Firsts are at home to Shoreham 1st and our Seconds play away at Heathfield and Waldron against their Boars team.

Newick 60 - 0 Cinque Ports

Newick were in impressive form in the Preliminary round of the RFU Junior Vase at the weekend (sat 5th sept) with a victory of 60 points to nil against lower league Cinque Ports.

Newick scored 10 tries and 5 conversions from strong running and good solid support in the rucks and mauls, though there were still a few handling errors and forward passes that need to be ironed out as the league season gets underway, for the first xv, next week.

All credit and thanks to Cinque Ports for a good humored game played in the proper rubgy spirit.

Next weekend (12th sept) Newick 1 xv play host to Hellingly 1 xv in the first league game of the season. 3pm kickoff and we kick off our running of the bar.

RFU Junior Vase National Knockout

Newick will be hosting Cinque Ports in the Preliminary round of the RFU Junior Vase National Knockout.

The Game will be kick off at 2:30 pm and will be refereed by David Tree, President of the Sussex Society of Rugby Football Referees.

The game will be followed by a BBQ at the Crown as the Cricketers still have control of the bar...

Newick 5-0 Shoreham.

In a game with good defence and handling errors on both sides, saw Newick sneak a try in the last quarter of the game with Russell crossing the line.

Newick had the advantage of a full bench which were chopped and changed to try people in different positions and in different combinations.

There were many positives in the game and with the first round of the RFU National Cups starting next week, any playing time at all can only be an advantage.

With the cup next week we would love to see a nice full touchline of supporters and we also plan to sell off last season's playing kit, so if you have a favoured number, make sure you are there to get it....

Kick off for the cup game will be 2:30 to allow for any extra time.

The new playing shirts had their first outing this weekend in the first trials game against Lewes 2's and 3's. The final score was 21 - 38 to Lewes, but there are a great many positives that the Newick players can take from the experience.

This Sat (29th august) we play host to Shoreham 1's and 2's in another trials game. 3pm kick off.

Cup Fixtures Are in

The league and cup fixtures are now all in and can be seen on the First xv and Second xv Pages or as a whole on the Fixtures page.

In the RFU Junior Vase we have been drawn against Cinque Ports in the prelim round on Sept 5th 2009In the Sussex Shield "Spitfire Knockout" the first xv will face Rye at home on 2nd January (you read that right)In the Sussex Salva "Spitfire Knockout" the second xv will play Horsham 3 away on 31st October.

New strip.

The new strip has arrived. The shirts are being supplied by Terminator Clothing and are fully sublimated shirts made of a breathable polyester fabric.

We are waiting on the News Shorts and socks that should be with us for the start of the league campaign
